The Open Championship Turnberry 2009

The Open Championship at Turnberry will be held between Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th of July. However tickets are available for the week commencing on Sunday the 12th for practice days. The opening hours of the event are as follows

  • Sunday 12 July  from 9 a.m.
  • Monday 13 July to Wednesday 15 July  from 7 a.m.
  • Thursday 16 July and -Friday 17 July from 6.15 a.m.
  • Saturday 18 July from 7 a.m.
  • Sunday 19 July from 7 a.m.

The hours of play through the competition daysare from 6.30am until the final tee off time of 4.21pm on the Thursday and Friday and tee times from 8.30am until 2.30pm on the final two days. Practice is ad hoc but times are available on the R&A Website and on course for each day

Some useful information

  • Programmes may be purchased from kiosks at the Championship but will also be available to purchase online from the Open Golf Shop website
  • There are about15,000 located around the course and practice ground.
  • New for 2009 - holders of Season and Daily tickets are not permitted to leave the event and return on the same day using the same ticket. Not such a problem for Turnberry but could be for other courses in the future.
  • Mobile phones are strictly no go. The R&A have banned them completely - be warned!
  • So are cameras on Championship days.
  • As are stepladders!
  • Free golf lessons from PGA professionals will be available for those aged under 16.

Travel by Road

Strathclyde Police advise you to follow the specific ‘Open’ signs provided by The AA. The suggested routes are as follows:

  • Travelling from the north: Follow the M77 and thereafter the A77.
  • Travelling from the east: Follow the M8 and exit and junction 22 to the M77 and thereafter the A77.
  • Travelling from the south: Follow the M6 to the M74, exit at junction 12 and follow the A70 west to the A77.

Parking

Weekly Car Parking Labels cost of £45.00 and need to be purchased in advance. Daily car parking is payable on arrival and costs £5.00 from Sunday 12 July to Tuesday 14 July and £10.00 from Wednesday onwards.

Travel By Rail

First ScotRail’s Golflink is available from Wednesday 15 July to Sunday 19 July and combines rail travel to Girvan a(five miles south of the venue) nd a bus link to the course for a single ticket price. Golflink tickets are available from First ScotRail stations from 1 May onwards. The transfer from the southside of Turnberry is likely to be quite painless as most traffic is coming from the north

By Air

The closest airport to Turnberry is Glasgow Prestwick which has a host of inbound Ryanair services and is only twenty miles north of the course. Glasgow aiprort is a further forty five minutes away and has additional low cost and scheduled long haul routes.
